Rise in child obesity-related hospital admissions.

There has been a four-fold increase in the number of children and teenagers admitted to hospital for obesity-related conditions in the last decade, doctors in England and Wales warn.
In 2009, nearly 4,000 young people needed hospital treatment for problems complicated by being overweight compared with just 872 in 2000.

Rates of obesity surgery also went up, especially for teenage girls.

Doctors say the UK has the highest rate of child obesity in Western Europe. Obesity has been linked with serious illnesses during childhood and an increased risk of developing conditions, such as type-2 diabetes, asthma and breathing difficulties during sleep.National surveys in England suggest about three in 10 two-to-15-year-olds are overweight, while 14-20% are obese.

It's a ticking time bomb and the clock ticks forever faster. If we as a society don't do something soon it will be too late or is it already too late for some? My grandchildren could eat more wholesome food, my daughter does her best, but they still have crisps and chocolate bars supplied by school tuck shops, so much for Jamie Oliver's crusade.

Joe, you are right it is a ticking time bomb and the problem is not enough people know how to de-fuse it. Many more are learning the benefits that help when you reduce the sugar and carbohydrates that so many gorge on. We can only pass on the benefits that this reduction makes. I think Jamie Oliver meant well when he tried to improve school dinners etc but you only have to read Zoe Harcombe's article (click on at the side of this blog) to realise much much more needs to be done.

All the best Jan
