What is the Cause of the Obesity Epidemic in the U.S.?

Two Keys to Curb Out-of-Control Obesity…
I believe there are two primary dietary recommendations that could make all the difference in the world. Unfortunately, they’re both extremely unpopular because accepting these recommendations means cutting profitability for the food industry, and major health agencies having to confess that they’ve been misleading you for a very long time…
The two primary keys I’m talking about are:
  1. Severely restricting carbohydrates (sugars, fructose, and grains) in your diet, and
  2. Increasing healthy fat consumption
While health authorities insist that sugar is fine “in moderation,” and that grains are an essential part of a healthy diet and can actually help you prevent heart disease, they fail to take into consideration that:
  1. Fructose is the NUMBER ONE source of calories in the US. This means it’s far from “moderate,” and this is not at all surprising when you consider that fructose, primarily in the form of cheap high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), is in just about everything—even food items you’d never expect would need it, including diet foods and ‘enhanced’ water products. Even most infant formulas contain the sugar equivalent of one can of Coca-Cola!
  2. Refined carbohydrates (breakfast cereals, bagels, waffles etc) quickly breaks down to sugar, increase your insulin levels, and cause insulin resistance, which is the number one underlying factor of nearly every chronic disease known to man, including heart disease
They’ve been equally wrong about fat.

Big Pharma Rip Off !

Jo Kelly, a retired social worker in Conklin, Mich., and her husband, Ray, a retired railroad mechanic, each take Lipitor and two other brand-name medicines, plus some generic drugs. Both are 67, and they land in the Medicare prescription "doughnut hole," which means they must pay their drugs' full cost by late summer or early fall each year. That pushes their monthly cost for Lipitor to about $95 each, and their combined monthly prescription cost to nearly $1,100.

Generic Lipitor should hit pharmacies Nov. 30 and cost them around $10 each a month.
"It would be a tremendous help for us financially," she says. "It would allow us to start going out to eat again."

Why James Murdoch Is Now a Headache for Glaxo !

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) CEO Andrew Witty is no doubt gnashing his teeth over James Murdoch’s testimony to the U.K. parliament yesterday on the phone hacking scandal at News Corp. (NWS). Murdoch has sat on GSK’s board of directors since 2009. Murdoch is on the two of GSK’s board committees, corporate responsibility and remuneration. He now looks like an unfortunate candidate for both those jobs.

Reducing Fats does not Prevent Heart Disease or Save Lives.

"I’d agree regarding the importance of the public getting evidence-based advice. But why the need for further research? Are the results not clear? The pooled results of 48 studies show that low-fat eating or replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fats is an unmitigated failure. Why do we need more research? In the hope of keeping the fallacy alive?

What do the authors mean when they say “No clear effects of these interventions on total or cardiovascular mortality were seen.” Let me reword this line for the authors and call a spade a spade: “Conventional dietary advice regarding fat consumption has been proven to have no effect on risk of heart attack or stroke or cardiovascular mortality or total mortality – they don’t prevent disease nor save lives. We should abandon them.”

Carbo. The carb loving diabetic !

Check out Carbophiles blog and you will not see any links to useful sites or good information. You will not see any useful recipes for diabetics. You will not see any links to his website (he does not have one, they cost money). His forum failed when some money was required to keep it going. You will not see any information for controlling BG numbers. You will not see any information that helps to control diabetes.

So what do you see ? A blog of hate, a blog of lies and misinformation ! A blog where anonymous people are afraid to post even their forum names. Carbo posts the hate, but has zilch courage of his convictions, he refuses to meet me. As he once stated “this blog is for my personal pleasure”

Carbo likes to not control his obesity with carbs and Orlistat ! Self imposed dysentery is not my idea of fun, but each to his own eh. Carbo is a liar and gutless.

One thing I have to thank Carbo for is the page views on this site, around 33% of page views comes from his site. Maybe, just maybe, some of his anti lowcarb high med miscreants might see the light. I’m an optimist.

The recent post sums this high carb blowhard up.

"While it's not one of my best sentences It's still a well crafted one" You write a fair post Carbo but the content sucks !

Keep up the good work Carbo, it’s people like you that keep me going ! Who knows, you may one day acquire the courage to meet me. OK, maybe you should carry on skulking in the shadows and belittle people that have the courage of their convictions and prepared to publish their real name. You do at least offer a service for the liars and the failed. You fool no one other than your ilk. You may be addicted to carbs, but why are you hell bent on bringing people down to your level ?

Win a copy of Antony Worrall Thompson's weight loss cookbook !

The last time I saw AWT he was carrying a lot of excess blubber. He has come up with a cook book especially for diabetics.

"In 2003, Antony Worrall Thompson was told that he was at great risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes if left unchecked.

This diagnosis was the impetus Worrall Thompson needed to change his eating habits and his lifestyle, and led the celebrity chef to take a great interest in healthy cooking.

Worrall Thompson has worked with qualified dietitians to write cookbooks specifically for people with diabetes"

If he is eating some of the recipes in this cook book (check out the links in the link) full blown type two diabetes may be on the way. If he had kept away from dietitians he may have got it right.

Summer Time Foot Care, Special Awareness Needed For Diabetes Patients.

"With the peak of summer (and the heat) now upon us, many of us will take time to kick off the shoes and take a walk on the beach or maybe on a grassy field in the local park. Some may even hop into a river or creek to cool off. No worries, right?"

Could a High-Fat, Low-Carb Diet Replace Dialysis ?

"A type of low-carb, high-fat diet that's typically used to manage seizures for children with epilepsy could reverse kidney disease in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics, a new animal study suggests.

If successful in humans, the so-called ketogenic diet could have the potential to replace dialysis, which is a procedure that artificially filters blood in place of a damaged or failed kidney, said study researcher Charles Mobbs, professor of neuroscience and geriatrics and palliative care medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City"

I am fairly sceptical about this sort of study, too many times what works in a mouse does not work for a human being. However, does anyone remember Peppi ? He was diagnosed with severe kidney failure and his Doctor told him his life would be reduced significantly. Peppi went very low carb and reversed his kidney failure ! His Doctor was stunned and had never seen this happen before. I know two type one diabetics who have improved their GFR rate significantly with a lowcarb high fat diet. The sooner sugar and highly refined carbohydrates carry a government health warning the better !

Thank you Ali for sending us the link.

More from Carbo the great !

"I also appreciate the double standards – he continues to bewail his treatment at DCUK…on his blog…and yet when Edie’s victims complain about Edie’s behaviour he backs off. Jay joined DCUK to defend Edie’s position. It has to be said that it is this bystander’s opinion that Edie might have been just a little bit economic with the actualitĂ© with both Jimmy Moore and Jay. Personally, I’d have done a little more research before supporting someone as unpleasant as Edie."

Get real you sad chump. Do you really think a highly respected healthcare pro would join a forum to defend me ! You are more shot away than I thought ! Get lowcarbing and see the light. Dump those carbs !

Eddie

PS. Latest from the Carbo blog.

"Oooooh! Edie wants a face to face with Carbophile! Now that I would pay to see!

Any bets on that ever happening?"

Never in a million years ! Carbo is gutless and knows it !

Carbo sinks to a new low !

My arch nemesis Carbo the great (other than the dietition Ally) whose blog states on his blog header, “A simple carb loving person with diabetes, struggling with managing the condition and living a normal life”
Believe it or not how a person lives and whatever their poison is no great deal to me, but why drag others into the mire ? Carbo and his anonymous crew, they are always very anonymous, kick me to death at every opportunity. I know they are obsessed with me as this blog gives details of traffic sources and his gang of miscreants are on this blog 24/7 around the clock.

Allegedly Carbo is the fired moderator at DUK and the owner of the failed and defunct forum of failure ‘Diabetes for life’ Tubolard. Who knows, who cares ? I suspect we are all carb lovers, but some appreciate they have lead to our downfall. Some are addicted to carbs, why don’t they admit it and stop trying to bring others down to their level.

What sticks in my craw is how they disrupt, ridicule and try to bring others down to their level. Let them eat carbs and good luck to them, but to control diabetes you need a lot more than luck, and that’s a fact !

So Carbo, how about letting us know who you are. Start with your forum name and work up to your real name. How about meeting me. My money is on you are gutless and a coward and will skulk in the shadows forever. Keep spreading the lies and misinformation, you know how to contact me.

The Chipboard Diet.

How many times have you taken that unwanted and cheapo piece of furniture to the rubbish dump ? Most of this stuff is made of chipboard. I have devised a new diet that is lowcarb, cheap and helps recycling and global warming, ‘The Chipboard Diet’ !

Saw or smash the unwanted desk or table into food processor sized pieces and grind until fine. A useful tip ! Remove all nails, screws and metal parts first ! Add half a pint of hot water and an oxo cube, stir well and drink. Very filling and cheap and I guarantee lower BG numbers than Optislime. I reckon this food is high in fibre but as for calories who knows.

Another useful weight loss tip.

Run very high BG numbers until severe complications set in. When your legs have turned to condemned corned-beef, have them amputated. I reckon around 70-100 lbs weight loss in about 1 hour, think of the saving on shoes !

Prescriptions rise 70pc in a decade !

"Meanwhile, the drugs bill to tackle diabetes has risen rapidly. Experts say this is due both to a rise in the numbers of people with the disease - curreently estimated at about 2.5 million - and the fact a number of expensive new treatments have come on to the market. "

If you check out the NHS stats you see no progress has been made in the fight against serious complications, safer HbA1c numbers and life expectancy for diabetics. The new expensive drugs and healthcare professionals and dietitions have got nowhere, in fact the situation is getting worse. Diabetics requiring kidney dialysis is going up steeply.

There is no quick fix method to control type two diabetes, drugs or 600 calorie starvation diets will cure or control zilch. The chief symptom of type two diabetes is raised blood glucose and insulin levels. The food that brings this about is carbohydrates. I am sure every person reading this knows this for a fact. When are the medics going to realise ? Lowcarbing could save the NHS hundreds of millions of £s per year. Not only save money but show some real progress in the gruesome stats the NHS publish every year.

Eddie

NHS Statistics for 2008 2009:
Percentage of Type 1 diabetics with HbA1c greater than 7.5 per cent = 71.4 per cent.
Percentage of Type 2 diabetics with HbA1c greater than 7.5 per cent = 33.4 per cent.
Percentage of Type 1 diabetics with HbA1c greater than 10.0 per cent = 33.6 per cent.
Percentage of Type 2 diabetics with HbA1c greater than 10.0 per cent = 14.3 per cent.
These results are very similar to those found in 2006 – 2007 and 2007 – 2008.

Good luck with this - but it does sound a bit barking.

As reported a few intrepid seekers of the truth, or raving lunatics, depending on your point of view, are going for a 600 calories diet. This self administered flagellation has come about from the so called cure announced by Professor Roy Taylor et al. Evidently starving yourself close to death can cure type two diabetes. One of the guys doing a ‘Roy Taylor’ as I am sure this form of torture will become known as, has published his BG numbers for the last day and a half. These numbers range from 9.6 to 18.5. With an average of 13.7 when I last checked. These numbers are roughly three times higher than a non diabetic !

As one of the few awake and compos mentis members over at the forum of flog said on the thread “Good luck with this - but it does sound a bit barking” I could not agree more. There could be some method in Patches apparent madness. If he can keep up these highly dangerous BG numbers, a mods job or even chief administrators job could his for the asking. What ever happened to the 5% club ? OK, I know the answer to that one, most got banned or left.

The crazy world of diabetes if far crazier than I ever imagined and appears to be getting worse by the day.

Weight loss and Lowcarb: Time to stop denying the science !

I’m having a debate in a Norwegian paper with some official “nutrition experts”. They claimed that weight loss studies do not show any advantage for low carb diets. Unbelievably enough, that is what many so called experts still believe.

It’s either ignorance or science denial.

There are at least thirteen [updated:14] modern high quality trials that have shown significantly better weight loss with low carb diets. Here they are:

http://www.dietdoctor.com/weight-loss-time-to-stop-denying-the-science

The American obesity epidemic 1989 – 2010.

"Here is the obesity prevalence in the USA in 1989, as the modern obesity epidemic was just getting started. A few years earlier the fear of fat had gripped the nation, and eating carbohydrates instead was the solution.

Two short decades later, in 2009, the official obesity statistics had changed beyond all recognition. And every year there is a new record. Just recently the numbers for 2010 was released. Do you want to see them?"

Very much the same in the UK !

The lunacy of the 600 calorie diet.

Not so long ago, headline news stated Professor Roy Taylor a diabetes expert, had run a short trial with a few type two diabetics. He was surprised to find a calorie reduced diet of 600 calories a day appeared to reverse type two diabetes. I do not know if it dawned on him this must have meant a big reduction in carbohydrates as well as calories.

I see some brave souls are going for this torturous diet on the forum of flog, looking to reverse their type two diabetes. While I admire anyone who rolls the dice and tries to improve their health, they are wasting their time. I hope I am 100% wrong, but the facts are stacked against these intrepid people. I am sure they will lose weight and their BG numbers will plummet, but an eight week starvation diet is no cure.

There is no cure for type two diabetes. A typical type two diabetic at diagnosis has lost around 50% of beta cells. No diet will make them grow back. The key to reversing dangerous BG numbers is a strict reduction in the food that raises BG numbers i.e. carbs, for life not eight weeks !

Almost all diets fail, almost all diets involve a strict reduction in calories, that’s why they fail, starvation will always win. What we eat is as important as how much we eat. For most this is not just a calories in calories out situation, it’s far more complicated. Whether type one or two or non diabetic, the control of insulin is paramount in weight control and good health.

Why Drug Companies Do Not Want To Cure You !

We are familiar with the situation we find ourselves in, with illogical and dangerous opposition to the diet heretics that deny the true faith about the cause of many of today's ailments. It's happened before and truth finally won!

In 1982, two Australian doctors published an academic paper indicating that stomach ulcers were often caused by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. You would think the findings would be welcomed with open arms - not by everyone! As the extract below shows.

It took many years, however, before the seemingly simple cause for ulcers was accepted.

Drug companies that make enormous profits derived from the production of antacid tablets to relieve discomfort, were particularly antagonistic to the findings. Companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Astra had an annual income of over $8 billion from the sale of ulcer treatments such as “Tagamet” and “Zantac”. In 95 percent of cases, the symptoms returned within a year.

In a 1998 interview, Marshall explained: “The livelihood of gastroenterologists and many of the drug companies depended on these drugs that were worth billions of dollars, treating millions of people with ulcers.” When the symptoms returned, people were told to try a new drug.

“A pharmaceutical company wants to sell you a drug that you take every day for the rest of your life, a cholesterol drug, a diabetes drug, they are great sellers. If they sell you a drug which cures you, you only need to take it once or for one week. So how can you make it generate as much profit? I wasn’t supported by the big drug companies. There was plenty of money going into ulcer research, but not into these bacteria,” Marshall said."

Can dietary interventions treat diabetes' deathly global heathcare burdens?

A philosophical shift is required says Peter Wennstrom, the branding and nutrition expert and president of the Healthy Marketing Team based in Sweden, a country that has a fine tradition in greater good-benefitting social programmes, but one that like most others, is being squashed by public diabetes treatment costs.

“Diabetes together with hypertension and elevated cholesterol is topping the list of diet-related illnesses that is killing people and also killing welfare budgets,” Wennstrom said.
“Eating wrong is one of the biggest threats to our lives. The best selling medicines of today are drugs that treat obesity, type 2 diabetes and high levels of cholesterol. And the welfare system cannot handle the increasing cost of medical treatment for diet-related problems. Especially chronic illnesses like diabetes.”

Wennstrom said unhealthy food choices and widespread nutrition ignorance among both governments and consumers was permitting a status quo, “where society prefers to medicate rather than educate.”

His solution: “Try to intercept the consumer between the supermarket and the emergency ward.”

The most read post ever on this blog. Dr.Jay Wortman on reversing type two diabetes, a must watch !

Adolescent dairy product consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes in middle-aged women.

Conclusions: Our data suggest that higher dairy product intake during adolescence is associated with a lower risk of T2D. Some of the benefit of dairy product intake during high school may be due to the persistence of the consumption pattern during adulthood.

Why we fight on !

An email received yesterday at lowcarbdiabetic website, name removed. Thanks for taking the time to contact us.

Hello,

I just started looking at your site and so far I like what I see. On your web site, I am noticing a lot of what I know from a decade of experience with this disease, to be the truth about diabetes.  I have never been able to find a doctor or endocrinologist who was not a complete idiot about how I should treat this disease. My so called treatment was actually criminal. They were killing me!

I was forced to take control of my health and stopped taking all prescribed drugs, seeing doctors and going to labs. At that time I was on 5 different prescriptions none of which worked and all had significant side effects. I was injecting myself before every meal. The drugs, office visits and lab work cost me a lot or money! I believe making m oney was the primary focus of my treatment; to generate money for the medical community. I now control my health with diet (Atkins) and exercise and I am much healthier for it. The only money I have spent in years for my diabetes is for test strips and A1C test kits. I do my own lab work. My numbers are better than they ever were.

With some of the money I saved I bought myself a very nice bicycle and commute to work on it, 21 miles/day.

Thanks,

THE CIRCUS MAXIMUS EDITION ONE

I knew the stats for amputation for diabetics is grim and increasing, but not this grim. 260,000 per year according to Jopar. The saw bones must be working 24/7. Where do they dispose of all these limbs ?

From Jopar

“The statistics for amplutation is 5,000 operations a week, so a percentage of this will be individuals who face a second amplutatution, the T1 I know had her toes removed in 5 different operations not in a single one! But even if you take these figures as first time then as there are over 2.4 million diabetics the actual percentage is very small indeed, so who is scaremongering!”

“Control wise, for any T1 to follow an extreme low carb diet sucessfully actaully requires 3 types of insulin, the background, and indemediate one to inject 30 mintues at least before an high fat/protien meal, to match the profile of protien etc. Then a fast acting insulin for corrections..”

This from a self proclaimed expert on good control. A qualified chef, but cannot put a decent low carb meal together. A type one who’s husbands life has been saved by a hypo sensing dog. A person who said a couple of years ago the difference between HbA1c of 5 and 7 was only 2 percent and not worth bothering about. A person who stated “I would be dead if I followed Eddie’s or Fergus’ advice” Why has no one not questioned her ludicrous comment on amputations ? The true figure is nearer 5000 per year !

Sidbonkers

“With respect Ailz Barry Groves who ever he is doesnt know what he is talking about, I rarely if ever eat less than 70g a day and usually a lot more than that and I am perfectly well controlled and am able to maintain the weight loss I achieved.”

“Firstly no one get a 2 hour slot with a consultant a doctor or a dietician it just deosnt happen which then makes me question the level of exaggeration in the rest of your posts

borofergie wrote:It's obvious that she was "reading from the script".

Seems to me its you who is 'reading from the script' the extremist low carb script”

Is hissing Sid calling the person a liar ? Don’t forget Sid says he is a lowcarber ! Well last month he was. Someone tell him who Barry Groves is, he has forgotten more about a healthy diet and weight control than Sid will ever know.

Noblehead

“You may well ask or question why I should write the above, well I thought it was fitting that I should at this time given what I have observed over the last few weeks on this forum which I will now lead onto.”
“Demonising carbs and dictating what members should and shouldn't eat has no place on a forum such as this which attracts a wide diversity of people controlling their diabetes by various methods, thankfully these members who use words like ''Carboholics'' are very few and far between and the majority of members here are more than happy and content to follow a low carb/reduced carb/moderate carb diet without needing to resort to insults or scare tactics concerning carbohydrates."

"It is and never has been anyone's business how members control their diabetes, we as members are only here to advise and offer support......nothing more and nothing less, so with this in mind I do hope that the Admin and the Forum Moderators will keep an eye on such tactics and take appropriate action where necessary.”

This from a person that vilifies dietary fat at every opportunity ! What planet is this guy on ! One of Kens bag carriers and anti lowcarb to the core. Never missing an opportunity to spread the fat will kill you dogma, i.e. putting the boot in on lowcarb higher fat diet. Wake up lad, you are as transparent as a freshly cleaned window !

Phoenix aka one point five on the Carb Sane-Asylum blog.

“Yes there are a group of diabetics who adopt low carb diets and do well. There are others that use alternative (mainly lower GI or med style diets) and also get good results. I ran a marathon in April, eat about 1800cal a day(the right amount for my age and gender so certainly not starving) About 45% of my diet is carb.”

45% carb diet ! Who do you know in the diabetic world that can tolerate 45% carb other than an insulin user ?

“I have also met T2s that have been taken into hospital for 3 weeks therapeutic education' an period where they 'have' to eat the recommended diet and do some exercise. Somehow when people eat consistently to the guidelines they gain control."

“Eat the recommended diet and do some exercise”

What as per the NHS, DUK or ADA. a total impossibility !

“I don't think any of the US bloggers have sunk so low as the heading on a blog from the UK 'Hope Warshaw more dangerous than Osama Bin Laden ?'. I could write a lot more about the author but I don't think he deserves the publicity.”

We will sink to any level to help fellow diabetics and expose the rubbish you and others promote. You have the benefit of insulin and a pump ! Many diabetics cannot get a few test strips from their HPs. You keep eating those carbs and pumping that insulin. You need insulin but the majority of diabetics do not ! Don’t push a diet that will lead to dangerous BG numbers, ever more meds, insulin and complications for many !

Let us not forget more than 75% of type one diabetics never get close to a safe HbA1c. On average a type one lives 20 years less than a non diabetic ! Not my opinion NHS statistics. For years the eat normally and cover with med’s approach has failed totally to make any progress, and that’s a fact. The gruesome NHS stats have been posted more than once on this blog.

How dare someone like Dr Jay Wortman come along and tell the truth !

Maybe I'm being naĂŻve, but I do detect a bit of an improvement over there. Having said that, I still have grave doubts it will be sustained! The trouble is that the idiots still chime in with snide and fatuous comments which invite a contribution from people like us. Then all hell breaks loose! One thing that drives me nuts is the wimmy wammy "Why can't we all be nice" or "Why can't we all stop arguing". That's right, we should have been nice to Mr Hitler as his mob marched across Europe! We shouldn't have argued with him. After all, arguments are unseemly and just upset some timid souls. How much can sensible and informed people with a spine put up with before they join the fray? If the troublemakers like the dietician, the village idiot, knobhead and the rest of the sycophantic rabble rousers were banned, the place could become the "Go to" place for diabetics. All the while they post their garbage, reasonable people will be unable to resist the urge to fight back, or call them to account. As I've said before, the clique seem to think the forum is their domain and they've attained some sort of "Elder statesman" status. In other words, in their minds, it's their forum and how dare someone like Dr Jay Wortman come along and tell the truth !

Jay Wortman MD receives the Wallycorker gold medal plus bar.

Some will remember the lowcarb advocate and total gentleman Wallycorker. A man with the unique distinction of being banned twice from d.co.uk under the same name.

After an extra-ordinary meeting of the trustees of the Wallycorker foundation, Jay having surpassed this achievement, has been awarded the highest honour. Not only has Jay been banned twice, the first time by the despotic Ken, but more recently for promoting a lowcarb lifestyle on the lowcarb forum.

He has been reinstated, thus giving him the opportunity of being banned three times, under the same name ! Clearly Jay is a cut above the rest !

THE CIRCUS MAXIMUS

THE CIRCUS MAXIMUS

Hi Folks, some well meaning people have requested we keep the grief regarding various anti lowcarb miscreants, and ludicrous misinformation regarding the forum of flog, off this blog. I can see where they are coming from. You could argue it dilutes our lowcarb message, but hey, where’s the fun in letting the misinformation mob off the hook !

One thing that may surprise people, is the fact I learned a few years back, aggro sells. Look at most forums, and you will often see the most signed in members occurred when a good bun fight was in progress. The same applies to this blog. The more controversial the post, the more page views it gets. Page views rocket. The more page views we get, the greater the chance of promoting the lowcarb cause and making new converts. Obviously we will make a few enemies, but as someone once said, you can’t make a good omelette without breaking a few eggs.

Stand by for the weekly Circus Maximus Column.

FDA Panel Opposes New Type of Diabetes Drug !

"The split vote, as well as panelist comments, makes it uncertain whether the FDA will approve the drug, jointly made by Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca. The FDA will certainly ask the companies to gather more data on side effects; the key question is whether the agency will ask for this data before or after approval.

That's by no means proof that the drug causes cancer. But definitive studies might require thousands of patients. The question now before the FDA is whether the modest blood-sugar-lowering and weight-reducing benefits of dapagliflozin are worth the risk."

Modest blood-sugar-lowering and weight-reducing benefits of type two diabetes drugs are the norm. Many have proved to be highly dangerous, so whats new ? How long before another type two wonder drug is banned ?

American Dietetic Association: Shill for Big Food.

"The problems at the ADA stem from the fact that they receive funding from some of the biggest processed food and nutritional product corporations. Take a look at some of the companies that either fund the ADA or write Nutrition Facts sheets for them:"

The American Dietetic Association is stuck on a 1970s nutritional program, handing out bad advice because they have joined hands with the processed food industry, and they can't bite the corporate hands that feed them. In her book, Food Politics, Marion Nestle, a Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, wrote:
"The ADA's stance on dietary advice is firmly pro-industry; one of its basic tenets is that there is no such thing as a good or a bad food. The Association is apparently willing to enter into partnerships with any food company or trade organization, regardless of the nutritional quality of its products."

Is God Stupid ?

Becky Hand another Dietition that is clueless !

“In fact, the human brain depends exclusively on carbohydrates for its energy.”

“Becky is a registered and licensed dietitian with almost 20 years of experience. Through her company, An Ounce of Prevention, she makes nutrition principles practical, easy to apply and fun”

“Nutrition principles” eh, pity she appears to not understand the basic principles. Carbohydrates are not essential for any part of the body especially the brain. “Easy to apply and fun” she may be having fun, but what about her patients and clients ? How easy must it be to become a qualified dietition, it appears anyone with a pulse can reap havoc on peoples health. I have searched long and hard to find a dietition that has even a basic knowledge of the correct diet for a diabetic.

If someone knows of a website or blog run by a dietition that understands the effect of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels, and the damage elevated blood glucose and insulin levels bring about please let me know. Has anyone else noticed these lunatics are almost always women ! Heading for my bomb proof bunker.

Final word goes to Sir Heneage Ogilvie, former vice president of the Royal College of Surgeons, England.

"There are three kinds of foods--fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. All of these provide calories. But the carbohydrates provide calories and nothing else. They have none of the essential elements to build up or to repair the tissues of the body. A man, given carbohydrates alone, however liberally, would starve to death on calories. The body must have proteins and animal fats. It has no need for carbohydrates, and, given the two essential foodstuffs, it can get all the calories it needs from them."

Darren Clarke wins the Open !

I don’t think there was ever a more worthy winner of the greatest golf tournament on earth than Darren Clarke. A great golfer and a fantastic guy. Golf followers will know he lost his wife at a very young age to cancer. He has seen the highs and the very lows of life and never gave up. A true star and roll model to all. Golf and life can be a very strange game at times. But we must never give up. Darkest moments can turn around so fast. Keep the faith.

Turn this one up and blow your brains out !!

Another fruit cake dietition Amy Poetker !

“I’d be willing to bet that most everyone has been told—and therefore believes—that people with diabetes cannot have any sugar and are resigned to living without dessert for the rest of their lives. Well, as a Certified Diabetes Educator, I'm here to tell you that this is a myth.”

“Because people with diabetes can eat foods that contain carbohydrates, whether those carbohydrates come from starchy foods like potatoes or sugary foods such as candy. It just takes a good plan to fit sugar into your day. In this article, you'll learn how to incorporate sweets into a healthy diet when you have type 2 diabetes.”

Get that sugar and spuds down your neck. Keep big pharma rolling in money. Don’t be selfish, what does your sight or limbs matter to the likes of these retards ! Do your bit for the global recession !
Where are these people trained ? OK I can understand big money can turn peoples heads, but when are these serial killers going to be brought to justice ? How do these people sleep ? Are they stupid beyond belief, or has money turned their heads ? Who’s payroll are they on ?

The Circus Maximus and Newdestinyx.

The old Circus aka diabetes.co.uk is one strange place. Just as one lunatic checks out (the jungle drums tell me a search for Ken in the members list results in 'does not exist' these days) a new one checks in. I dismissed the new one as a raver when I read one of his first posts.

“I have never subscribed to the notion that a diabetic has to have NON-diabetic numbers to prevent complications. Our T1's will prove again and again that you can live 30-40 years with A1'c even 7-8 or a little higher and have no complications. Science tells us that 'some diabetic retinopathies' can start even in the hi 5's with A1c - but the vast majority of complications don't present until there's a rampant lack of control for very long periods of time and very high A1c's”

I see he says he is low carb but not in the area of 30-50 carbs per day. Not healthy in his opinion, the science does not stack up evidently. He of course prefers to use insulin. A more recent post.

“For what it's worth - those gradations you give work for me and seem reasonable - except that <50 is WAY closer to <30 than it is to <130 -- so it very 'deservingly' gets the term I use 'extreme'. I don't want anyone to ge the idea that <50g of carbs/day is anywhere near 'something normal'. And the term 'lo carb' is just being applied too widely to everythings from <30 to <200. And that's a HUGE difference. As I've said a couple of times - all T2's include 'some level' of lowER carbing since I don't think any of us eat 300g or more anymore. I actually don't know anyone that eats 200g either? Pretty much 95% of us would probably fall from <50 to <200. From the manjority of the boards I've visited most tend to break it down:
>125 = normal non diabetic carbic intake - though 'lo carbers' as a 'movement' call it 'high carb'. (Interestingly - 'normal folks, and the South Beach people would see from here, 125g, to 300 as 'lower carbing - then 300+ as normal)”

I consider myself reasonably good at controlling type two diabetes, but the above post leaves me very confused.

Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi you’re my only hope !

Can vibrators and Dildos cause Diabetes ?

I have discovered over the last three years many factors are involved in succumbing to type two diabetes, but vibrators and dildos that's a new one for me.

"Germany's Green Party has called for new laws regulating sex toys, which they say can contain high amounts of phthalates, a family of chemicals used to soften plastic, and other carcinogenic plasticizers that you might not want touching your privates.

According to Der Spiegel on July 1, German officials warn that these toxic substances can enter the body through mucous membranes and lead to a host of health problems, such as infertility, hormone imbalances, diabetes, and even obesity.

Denmark has responded to the sex toy warnings by advising that users cover dildos and vibrators with condoms for protection and avoid products made with PVC."

Men might be making a come back (no pun intended).

Low-Carb Diet Edges Out Low-Fat Diet in Raising 'Good' Cholesterol.

Low-carbohydrate weight loss diets have an edge over low-fat diets for improving HDL cholesterol levels long term, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Dieters who followed low-carb or low-fat plans for two years along with a lifestyle modification program lost the same amount of weight -- on average about 7% of their body weight or 15 pounds.
But throughout the two-year study, low-carbohydrate dieters had significantly increased HDL, or "good," cholesterol levels compared to low-fat dieters.

“For many years there have been concerns that the low-carbohydrate approach to weight loss was bad for the heart,” he says. “This study would suggest those concerns are largely unfounded.”

Butter versus Margarine: Why Butter is Better !

Heart disease was rare in America at the turn of the century. Between 1920 and 1960, the incidence of heart disease rose precipitously to become America’s number one killer. During the same period butter consumption plummeted from eighteen pounds per person per year to four. It doesn’t take a Ph.D. in statistics to conclude that butter is not a cause. Actually butter contains many nutrients that protect us from heart disease. First among these is vitamin A which is needed for the health of the thyroid and adrenal glands, both of which play a role in maintaining the proper functioning of the heart and cardiovascular system. Abnormalities of the heart and larger blood vessels occur in babies born to vitamin A deficient mothers. Butter is America’s best and most easily absorbed source of vitamin A.

Low-Carbohydrate Diet Better Than Weight Loss Drug Orlistat at Lowering Blood Pressure With Weight Loss.

But when researchers looked at changes in blood pressure, they found nearly half of those who followed the low-carbohydrate group had their blood pressure medication decreased or discontinued during the study, compared to only 21% of those in the orlistat group.

Overall, systolic (the top number in a blood pressure reading) dropped an average of 5.9 points among the low-carb diet group, compared with an increase of 1.5 points in the orlistat group.

Researchers say weight loss itself typically produces a healthy reduction in blood pressure, but it appears that a low-carbohydrate diet has an additional blood pressure-lowering effect that merits further study.

Our favourite place The Lake District.

It’s been a while since we had a break. What with work and working for the lowcarb cause we are looking forward to some R and R. We will be going up to Lancaster to see some of our family in a couple of weeks, then on to the Lake District for some hill walking and fishing. I am a very lucky man, I love my wife, my family and my work. Diabetes was a life sentence for me. It was a big early warning, take it as such and get healthy ! We can control our diabetes and live a long and active life. I have made new friends and a few enemies, but hey you can’t win em all.

“Nuts!” to the Nutty Diabetes “Expert”

"I see … the reader has successfully managed his diabetes with diet, but we can simply dismiss that evidence because it’s an “experience of one.”  Ms. Warshaw apparently is convinced the reader is the only diabetic in the world who found a low-carb diet beneficial.  Therefore her advice to eat a high-carb diet is still correct."

Saturated Fat is Good for You - by Uffe Ravnskov MD

Saturated fat is the type of fat that dominates in animal food such as eggs, cream, meat and cheese and is also abundant in palm and coconut oil. Today, many scientists consider too much saturated fat just as dangerous to our arteries as greasy food leftovers is for the drains of kitchen sinks. Only 10,000 years ago, as hunter-gatherers, our Palaeolithic diet contained abundant saturated fat, though other scientists question this.

How sick can it get ?

When you are a politician you have got to roll with the punches. If you can’t take the heat keep out of the kitchen, it goes with the territory. Tonight I hear of people sinking to a new level. Ex PM Gordon Browns wife and children have been subjected to phone hacking and their privacy invaded. What kind of world are we living in ?

Children no more than babies are having their privacy invaded, and for what, the selling of newspapers by the despotic and ultra greedy, Rupert Murdoch. On tonight’s news I also viewed children dying from lack of water and malnutrition in Africa. This is in a world that some men can spend a million pounds on a car, or 250 million pounds on a yacht. How messed up do you need to be to spend a million pounds on a car to massage your ego and pretend you are someone special ? Ok this sort of indulgence provides work for people, but surely money could be spent better elsewhere.

It’s at times like this I am glad to be growing old and on the last lap of my life.

Caring for Your Feet With Diabetes.

"When you have diabetes, taking good care of your feet is very important. Poor foot care can lead to serious problems, including possibly having to remove -- or amputate -- the foot or leg.

As a person with diabetes, you are more vulnerable to foot problems because the disease can damage your nerves and reduce blood flow to your feet. The American Diabetes Association has estimated that one in five people with diabetes who seek hospital care do so for foot problems. By taking proper care of your feet, most serious problems can be prevented."

I am not so well heeled (no pun intended) I can afford to buy expensive clothing. Many of my clothes I buy second hand from ebay and charity shops. One area I do not skimp on is the very best wool and cotton socks and well made leather shoes.

Check out this link on foot care.

Hope Warshaw more dangerous than Osama Bin Laden ?

Until his recent demise in a US special forces operation Osama Bin Laden was arguably the most dangerous man on earth. The more I hear about Hope Warshaw the more I believe she should be placed on the FBI’s most wanted list. Over the top ? Well how many people do you have to kill before the guys from Quantico are on the case ? Check out some of the comments on the link below and tell me this woman is not one of the most dangerous people in America.

“Old Dogma: People with type 2 diabetes should follow a low carbohydrate diet.”

“New Reality: Nutrition recommendations for people with type 2 diabetes from the American Diabetes Association and other health authorities echo the recently unveiled U.S. 2010 Dietary Guidelines (1/31/11) for carbohydrate about 45 to 65 percent of calories. (Americans currently eat about 45 to 50 percent of calories as carbohydrate--not a "high carb" intake.)”

“Countless research studies do not show long term (greater than six months to a year) benefit of low carb diets on blood glucose, weight control, or blood fats.”

No Hope Warshaw

Low carb bread: Another fairy tale bites the dust !

Jimmy Moore never ceases to amaze me, his work rate is stunning. Everywhere I look he is promoting the lowcarb way of life. Check out this very interesting read where he takes on a bakery selling a supposedly lowcarb bread. A point to remember is Jimmy is not a diabetic and unlike most of us still has a primary insulin response.

"The words “Net carb” on the packaging is enough to make me suspicious. “Net carb” usually means that someone is trying to sell you stuff by telling you a fairy tale.

Is Julian Bakery’s bread an exception?"

Dr.Jay Wortman on reversing type two diabetes, a must watch !

Nuts instead of carbs may aid diabetes control.

"NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Replacing that daily muffin with a handful or two of nuts may help people with diabetes better control their blood sugar and cholesterol levels, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that when people with type 2 diabetes replaced some of their usual carbohydrates with about a half-cup of mixed nuts each day, the study participants' blood sugar and "bad" cholesterol levels dipped slightly over three months.

In contrast, no such improvements were seen among people who swapped their normal carbs for a daily whole-wheat muffin.

For people who are not crazy about nuts, there are other sources of monounsaturated fat, like olive oil and avocados. While this study did not look at those foods, Kendall said it would be a wise move to replace some carbs with those fats."

What it's all about !

wiflib wrote:When it comes to choice, I choose my eyesight, feet, healthy heart and reduced stroke risk over a boiled potato or a spoonful of rice anytime.

Me too. Since being diagnosed 3 months ago, I've manage to reduce my Hb1ac from 10.2% to 5.2%.

Like wifilib, I have an almost zero tolerance approach to carbs, I aim for <30g a day, mainly by eating low or zero carb food for breakfast and lunch, so that I can eat as many vegetables as I like with my evening meal (and I never eat pasta, bread or rice).

I haven't missed the carbs at all. I feel 100 times better, and 20lbs lighter.

Self monitoring of blood glucose in non-insulin-treated Type 2 diabetes.

These are three quotes from a report by the NHS Diabetes Working Group, worth bearing in mind if your test strips are withdrawn.

"There is increasing concern that health service managers and GPs are using recently published evidence to prevent even individuals who find blood glucose monitoring useful from checking their blood glucose
whenever they fell the need to."

"Some newly diagnosed individuals and others with diabetes of longer duration but not taking insulin clearly benefit from measuring their blood glucose. In those individuals who find modern technology essential to managing their diabetes, arbitrary withdrawal of treatment should not occur. It would limit patient choice and may lead to a deterioration in blood glucose control."

"Clinical experience suggests that a decision to withhold blood glucose monitoring technology from patients to whom monitoring has become an essential component of their self-management strategy might be damaging. Such a policy could risk both alienating them from their professional carers as well as leading to a deterioration in their metabolic control and a consequent increased risk of complications."

Nothing changes !

Numbskulls, Deadbeats and other Miscreants.

Ok, I can hear you, here we go again, groan. Believe me I prefer posting interesting and informative links, food ideas and taking it easy, but the idiocy out there reaches new heights by the day. Take this I spotted yesterday.

“I have never subscribed to the notion that a diabetic has to have NON-diabetic numbers to prevent complications. Our T1's will prove again and again that you can live 30-40 years with A1'c even 7-8 or a little higher and have no complications. 30 or 40 years eh, try telling that to a parent of a 2 year old type one diabetic or maybe an eight year old type two. Yes, kids under ten are being diagnosed as type two’s. With good advice and control I would hope they have a lot more than 30 or 40 years before complications set in. By the way the genius that posted the above holds HbA1c in the fives. So this guy holds good numbers but hey, you can play Russian roulette if you want, undertaker maybe ?

This one gave me a chuckle.
“Finally uploaded an avatar..

I chose a Banksy picture, wasn't happy that i had to cut the girls legs off to make her fit.

Anyone else like banksy's work?”

“Hiya , your new avatar is fab ! I have only seen a couple of banksy work , what does make you stop and look intensly at his work is that in its simplicicty its so "profound and speaks silent volumes" His work now sells for mega money!”

"profound and speaks silent volumes" don’t it just. A picture of a child minus limbs on a diabetes forum !

A few avatar ideas, Blind Pugh, Long John Silver or how about Captain Ahab.

Why are Dietitians trying to kill diabetics ?

"Of course, I honestly believe Hope Warshaw knows all of this and is simply saying what needs to be said so she can keep her cushy position as a bona fide diabetes “expert.” But the gig is almost up and there will be a heavy price to pay to her reputation as Type 2 diabetics realize they have been lied to. Perhaps Warshaw honestly believes in her heart of hearts that the answer to treating diabetes is indeed more and more medication. Yet it would seem to me that if there were a way to control blood sugar levels, lower A1c numbers, and get this disease under control WITHOUT medication, why wouldn’t you shout it from the rooftops and to everyone dealing with Type 2 diabetes? It’s rather conspicuous that Warshaw would describe a low-carb diet as “old dogma” and replace it with her “new reality” recommendation of more carbohydrates which will then require more medications to cover up. Am I missing something here?"

Check this Jimmy Moore story out, remind you of anyone we know ?

Does Anyone Know a TRUE Low Carber with Diabetic Complications?

My wife and I get out and about a lot with our two Greyhounds. These dogs attract a lot of attention so an hours walk turns into a two hour outing with stops to answer questions about the dogs.We have always gone out of our way to let the disabled, especially those in wheelchairs, pet the dogs and in doing so often get to find out how they came to be disabled in the first place. On many other occasions we have met people on crutches with a bandaged foot resulting from unhealed injuries.

I'm horrified at the sheer number of these unfortunates who have diabetes! The other shocking aspect of this is the complete bewilderment when I tell them I'm diabetic but control it with a low carb diet. They usually go on to tell be how wonderful the doctors have been to them and got them through heart attacks, strokes, hypos etc. I have learned to give up and just wish them well.

They just don't, or won't get it, that what applies to me, also applies to them! I find this situation distressing but have learned to recognise when I'm bashing my head against a brick wall!

The point is though, I've not met a low carber with these complications. I did once meet a fellow low carber who spoke to us in a queue in a cafe. He detected from our order that we were low carbing. He went on to tell us how he'd halted, and largely reversed, his complications by going low carb.

On the other hand, is it that generally, I wouldn't know if they were a low carber or not because they're walking about with no visible evidence that they have diabetes?

In the title I specify "TRUE" low carber as I am aware that some pay lip service to it without actually really practising it.

I would love to hear other's opinions on this subject.

Interesting item on salt and other myths.

"Witness the low-fat campaign that has raged on for decades despite research that now shows the low-fat campaign was actually based on little scientific evidence. When it comes to the fat debate, the crucial issue is determining which fats are healthy and which fats are not: Real, whole-food sources of fats, like butter and eggs, are healthy while industrially produced sources of fats, like partially hydrogenated oils or trans-fats, are not. Real fats and industrial fats cannot be lumped into the same category, and when they are, as is often the case in scientific research, the results are muddled. This was the case with studies on coconut oil, which used partially hydrogenated versions to determine that coconut oil was unhealthy, tarnishing its reputation as one of the worst fats. Meanwhile, recent research using unprocessed coconut oil shows that it is actually a healthy fat with a host of health benefits."

Tonights great Lowcarb Food !

This is the type of food that has kept my BG and HbA1c numbers non diabetic, other than diagnosis, for over three years. Mini pork belly joint with caramelised apple and shallot stuffing (Sainsbury's) 6.4 grams carb per half pack, which includes two portions. Served with roast celeriac and micro waved cabbage and spring greens.

A great meal and around ten grams of carb in total. Less than one slice of white bread, think about that !

Study casts doubt on diabetes screening !

"The researchers from the University of Cambridge, including GP advisers to the Government on vascular screening, presented the study at the American diabetes Association in San Diego this week.

The study analysed data from 3,055 type 2 diabetes patients aged 40 to 69 years – 1,377 given usual care and 1,678 given intensive treatment – all of whom were detected by screening undiagnosed patients using a risk score assessment of general practice medical records at 343 practices in the UK, Denmark, and the Netherlands."

"The extent to which the complications of diabetes can be reduced by earlier detection and treatment remains uncertain."

Is the clue here "intensive treatment" The ACCORD study showed  "intensive treatment" with multi diabetes drug therapy was dangerous. Is a healthy low carb diet and getting off our butts regarded as  "intensive treatment" ? I don't think so ! When will they publish some data regarding diabetics that hold HbA1c in the fours and fives, not using "intensive treatment" ?

Drugs firms lavished millions on freebies for NHS staff !

Big drug firms have spent millions of pounds on bankrolling events and trips for NHS staff, an Independent on Sunday investigation of trust records has revealed. The catalogue of freebies includes Pfizer providing hospitality to dozens of doctors attending a meeting at the five-star Gleneagles hotel resort in Scotland, and a dinner meeting between three Eli Lilly staff and two nurses at which 22 alcoholic drinks were consumed.

Dr Joanna Moncrieff, at the Department of Mental Health Sciences, University College London, said: "Any level of hospitality for doctors provided by drug companies is an issue because it is bribery – it's an inducement to prescribe a particular drug that has nothing to do with the therapeutic merits of the drug concerned."

British drugs companies do not disclose spending on hospitality and sponsorship, but figures from US company reports reveal that in 2010 Bristol-Myers Squibb spent £2.24bn on "marketing, selling and administrative" costs, and Merck spent £1.6m on grants, donations or payments to more than 146 health institutions and patient organisations in the UK.

Survey: Diabetes Patients Don't Change Lifestyle.

"Most people with diabetes know the lifestyle changes they need to make to help control their condition but fail to follow through, according to findings of the largest nongovernmental study of its kind.
Nearly nine out of 10 (87%) of 3,867 people with type 2 diabetes surveyed knew that obesity  can aggravate their disease. But only 70% said they had tried to lose weight in the previous year. And only one in three indicated they had maintained their desired weight for more than six months."

The National Diabetes Audit 2009 - 2010 is now available.

Glucose control (HbA1c)

85.8 per cent of records from people with Type 1 diabetes and 91.0 per cent of people with Type 2 diabetes included an HbA1c measurement.

The NICE recommended HbA1c of = 7.5 per cent (59mmol/mol) target was achieved in 66.5 per cent of the measurements from people with Type 2 diabetes but only 28.2 per cent of the measurements from people with Type 1 diabetes.

Thus, overall 37.0 per cent of people with diabetes are at high risk of future complications due to glucose control above recommended levels.

Furthermore, 17.0 per cent of people with Type 1 diabetes and 6.7 per cent of people with Type 2 diabetes have very high risk glucose control (HbA1c of >10 per cent, 86mmol/mol).

These overall results are very similar to those found in the 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 audits.

Similar to previous years. The % of both type 1 and 2 not attaining a HbA1c <10% is truly shocking.

Business as usual !

Kendrick on...the fact obesity does not cause diabetes !

"Obesity, we're told, represents the next great disease epidemic and GPs should get on and treat it. This is despite the fact that all 'treatments' for obesity have been shown to be almost useless, often resulting in greater weight gain in the long-term.

But it is not just Asian Indians who refute the hypothesised link between obesity and type 2 diabetes. There are many others. Perhaps the most spectacular can be found in a condition known as Berardinelli-Seip syndrome. People affected by this syndrome have very little adipose tissue. Theoretically, therefore, they should have no problems with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. Not so. Every individual with Berardinelli-Seip suffers from insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus2.

On the other hand, the most highly 'obese' population in the world – Sumo wrestlers – has no problems with type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance."

John Yudkin

"Since 1957 he showed that the consumption of sugar and refined sweeteners is closely associated with CHD and type two diabetes. Studies he conducted on sugars and starches indicated that they raised blood triglycerides  and  insulin levels. He became internationally famous with his book Pure, White and Deadly (published in 1972), which was also published in German, and in a Swedish translation."

Over 50 years on and diabetics are still being told to base their diet on sugar/starch. This is the reason for the grim statistics posted on this blog. Over 3 years on I am still waiting for an answer to this question, how do I hold non diabetic numbers other than lowcarb ?

The Prevalence and Impact of Diabetes in the UK

This post uses the following reference “Diabetes in the UK 2010 – Key Statistics on Diabetes”. Link at bottom of page. [Page xx] refers to the page number xx of the above document.

Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges in the UK today. The UK is facing a huge increase in the number of people with diabetes. In 1996 the number of people diagnosed with diabetes was approximately 1.4 million, in 2009 approximately 2.6 million and by 2025 estimated to be approximately 4 million [Page 3].

The motivation for the post comes from the realisation that if the growing health crisis is to be curbed and the number of people dying from diabetes and its complications is to be reduced then there is a need to increase awareness of the risks involved in not keeping blood glucose levels under control.

IF YOU FIND QUANTITAVE ESTIMATES OF THE RISKS INVOLVED IN NOT KEEPING BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS UNDER CONTROL DISTRESSING, PLEASE DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER, THE ESTIMATES MAKE GRIM READING!
Prevalence

Adults: In 2009 there was approximately 2.6 million adults diagnosed with diabetes: approximately 10 % Type 1, 90 % Type 2 [Page 4].

Children: In England in 2009 there was approximately 22000 children diagnosed with diabetes: approximately 97 % Type 1, 1.5 % Type 2 and 1.5 % another type of diabetes [Page 7].

Impacts

Keeping blood glucose levels as near normal as possible can greatly reduce the risks of the following diabetes complications [Page 11].

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD): CVD accounts for 44 % of fatalities with Type 1, 52 % in Type 2 [Page 11].

Kidney Disease (nephropathy): Kidney disease accounts for 21 % of fatalities with Type 1, 11 % in Type 2 [Page 12].

Eye Disease (retinopathy): Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness; within 20 years of diagnosis nearly 100 % Type 1 and almost 60 % of Type 2 have some degree of retinopathy [Page 12].

Amputation: Diabetes is the leading cause of lower limb amputations; more than 10 % of foot ulcers result in an amputation; up to 70 % diabetics die within 5 years of having an amputation [Page 12].

Depression: The prevalence of depression is approximately twice as high in diabetics as it is in the general population [Page 13].

Neuropathy: May affect up to 50 % of diabetics [page 13].

Complications In Pregnancy: In order not to increase the stress I have not quoted the relevant statistic. The statistics can be found on [Page 14].

Life Expectancy: Life expectancy is reduced, on average, by more than 20 years for Type 1, up to 10 years for Type 2 [Page 14].

Good Diabetes Management

Research shows that keeping blood glucose levels as near normal as possible, keeping blood pressure well controlled, managing weight and keeping active can greatly reduce the risk of the diabetic complications.

Are those spuds worth it?

Lowcarb Lasagne Style Bake.

Ok I realise this meal looks like a pavement pizza but assure you it tastes great. This is one of the most tasty lowcarb meals I know. In future I am going to make individual servings and serve straight from the oven to the table, for a really great presentation. The oven proof dishes in picture 2 are from Sainsbury’s at only £1.99 each. They are approx.7" x 5.5" x 2.5" deep and are very heavy and just the job.

Ingredients.

250 grams of minced beef.
1 Large courgette
1 large tomato
1 small red onion
300ml of single cream
150 grams of grated cheddar cheese
150 grams of grated gruyere cheese
4 medium sized mushrooms
2 large garlic gloves
Dried mixed herbs
Salt
Black pepper
Knob of butter

Method.

Chop the onion and garlic cloves fine and fry in a large frying pan with a knob of butter until soft, don’t allow to brown. Place the mince in the frying pan with the onion and garlic and brown. Set aside.
Place the cream in a small non stick sauce pan and heat, do not allow to boil. Add 50 grams of cheddar cheese to the cream and keep stirring until the cheese has melted.

Place a layer of mince in a baking dish, followed by a layer of sliced tomato, and some more mince. Add a layer of uncooked and thinly sliced courgette and cheddar cheese. Add another layer of mince. Add a layer of thinly sliced mushrooms. Pour over the cheese cream mix. Cover with finely grated gruyere cheese. Cover dish with foil and cook at 200c for twenty minutes. Remove foil and bake for a further 20 minutes. The top should be a lovely golden brown.

This Blog Needs You !

Firstly, thank you to all the people that read and comment on this blog. Most comments are very positive, some are negative and are posted, some are clearly the rants of the unhinged and are binned. Your comments keep our little team going, how about going a step further and posting your good news or recipe ideas ? Maybe you have found an article that you feel other lowcarbers would find interesting.

Maybe, just maybe you feel you are flogging a dead horse elsewhere ! Maybe you feel elsewhere is a lost cause ! Elsewhere seems to be running a competition for the member with the highest BG number these days, but as all of you know, I’m very biased ! I’m dumb enough to believe the closer a diabetic can get to non diabetic BG numbers the better. I’m dumb enough to believe good fresh food and exercise is a far safer and healthier option than unnecessary drugs and medication. Elsewhere my message and others that believe the same as me are clearly not wanted.

Secondly forums. Over the last couple of months I have been asked on many occasions why don’t I start a forum. Kind people have offered to pick up the bill, but for me it’s a no no. It seems to me forums fall roughly into to two types. Some are long standing and are excellent and others are lunatic asylums with commercial interests setting the agenda. Lets face it, there is little if any money to made promoting a healthy life style based on common sense, plain healthy food and moderate exercise. The money is in selling junk that no-one needs, such as useless recipe books, vibrating foot plates and high carb diabetic hampers etc etc. Some people have been banned from forums, but the marketing via emails continues. Yesterday I observed the sad spectacle of a dead man being wished a happy birthday on two forums. It appears the grave offers no hiding place from the big sell.

If you are interested in joining our small team, post a comment on this post marked do not publish with your email address or email the address on our website below. Your email address will not be used in any way other than to contact you and will held in strictest confidence.

Novak Djokovic win or lose tomorrow he will be officially the worlds no 1

"It all changed last year when his nutritionist tested him positive for a gluten allergy. That resulted in Djokovic cutting off pasta, pizza, beer, bread, corn flakes – most processed carbs to cut a long story short – all of which contain gluten. So much for the idea of the carb boost required for athletic endurance!

Now who would’ve thought that a simple allergy test could have led to one of the most dominant stretches in tennis history?

Gluten is a kind of protein found in most processed carbohydrates. But many a time, when we eat highly processed foods like most cereals, bread, pizza, pasta, naans etc. we don’t give much thought to how it's affecting our health.

Today a lot of medical practitioners the world over are opening up to the fact that highly processed white sugar, white flour, and other food items are a lot more dangerous (rather than just fattening) than what we had previously thought. Getting your carbs from fresh vegetables, salads, and fruit is a far better and healthier alternative."

The lowcarb Antis.

I follow this mob. They never give up. Most seem to be early retired or on the dole, or invalidity pensions. All kick lowcarb at every opportunity. So, lets have a look at the antis. Jopar who once said “if I followed Eddies or Fergus’ diet I would be dead” Amongst her many stated qualifications she is a qualified chief. Surely in a great position to work out a good diet for herself and diabetic husband. Err no, he has made national headlines when he was saved by a hypo sensing dog.

Noblehead, admitted after years of insulin dependent diabetes he did not even know how to store his insulin. Next comes Ka-Mon, two days ago after a ham sandwich and using two BG meters he was in the 12-14 BG number. As for Ken, he does not know what he is. One day it’s “bread is a no“, then “I can eat two slices of crusty white with no effect” Then we have the cherub. No meds, low GI and an HbA1c in the fours, but never the slightest detail how this is achieved.

Sid Bonkers, the name says it all. Ally, if you believe the bilge she spouts, I recommend psychiatric counselling at the earliest opportunity. Have I missed anyone, does it matter ? Not to anyone who has gained safe BG numbers, but how much damage have this motley crew done to the newly diagnosed or the confused ? I suspect they are proud of themselves, as they are fond of saying, we are all different. Ain’t that a fact !
