What is a low carb lifestyle.

Here’s the way we define different levels of low carb at Diet Doctor:
Strict low carb <20 gram carbs per day
Moderate low carb 20-50 grams per day
Liberal low carb 50-100 grams per day

For comparison a regular Western diet can easily contain 250 grams of carbs or more in a day, most of them bad refined carbs, including sugar.

For more information check out the great Diet Doctor site which can be found here.

Hi Debbie, I like carbs, Italian, Chinese and Indian food was my sort of food, for much of my adult life, but a high carb diet very near killed me. I have a choice, low carb or lots of drugs, many ineffective or carry dangerous side effects. I chose real whole fresh whole food. Remember carbs equals sugar and sugar is poison for most.

Hiya,

I started low carbing - 32 grams - 20 years ago. The nurses shouted at me for being crazy and told me not to ignore 'quality of life' would you believe. After 16 years of it I fell off the wagon a few years back and now they shout at me for not low carbing :-)
Now I find it hard to go so low.

Hi Joanna

I too would find it hard, but I have no choice. That being said it gets easier. I am motivated by fear, as a type two diabetic, I fear going blind, I fear being an amputee. Jan is not a diabetic and touch wood, super fit and healthy. She low carbs because Alzheimer's runs in her family. Will this help, who knows, but a whole fresh food diet cannot do any harm, and most whole fresh food is low carb.

The Government say we should eat 230 - 300g carbs a day. Next time a doctor or nurse freaks out about my diet I'll point out that this equates to three Glucose Tolerance Tests per day, every day.
